Previous measurements using the echo sounder had proven inaccurate. Scientists also noted that conditions at depths of more than 400 metres were similar to those in the Caribbean Sea and nearby reef lagoons. It is thought that Taam Ja may be connected to the ocean through a network of hidden tunnels and caves.
