Thailand’s coastal zone has long been one of the favourite destinations for divers due to the beauty of underwater scenery, but now the holidays of lovers of this hobby are under threat.
Snorkelling and diving have been temporarily banned in popular Phuket resorts, as these human pastimes have recently been significantly damaging coral reefs. The measures were announced by Hat Nopharat Tara Moo Koh Phi Phi Phi National Park, with the ban taking effect from 16 May.
Studies have revealed serious coral bleaching as well as a reduction in the diversity of marine animals and plants.
