The country’s Ministry of Environment has announced its intention to ban all clothing, footwear and waterproofing materials containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, citing numerous health risks.
Originating in the 1930s, PFASs became widespread in the 1950s. They are used in a variety of products, from cars and carpets to packaging and care products.
Studies have shown links between PFASs and reproductive health problems, developmental delays in children, cancer and high cholesterol.
