Blue holes are huge caves on the seabed left during the Ice Ages, with walls composed mainly of water-soluble porous limestone. They were formed during periods of cooling when sea levels dropped significantly. The researchers used a set of probes attached to a circular metal frame. The device was lowered into the water via a cable and transmitted real-time data on depth, temperature and other water characteristics.
